Cheongsams or qipaos (旗袍) are believed to have the most alluring body-hugging silhouette that highlights feminine curves in the best way ever. Today’s top international designers/brands such as Vivienne Tam and Shiatzy Chen have seeked inspiration from these traditional Chinese dresses for setting the modern oriental trend to celebrate the inheritance of Chinese clothing aesthetics. To promote “Hong Kong Week 2013@Taipei,” Institute of Textiles & Clothing (the Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and the Hong Kong #Museum of #History co-organized “Legacies & Innovations: Cheongsam Fashion Show” showcasing more than 40 contemporary cheongsams by ITC fashion design staff, alumni and students and design staff at the fashion school at Taipei's Fu Jen Catholic University and Shih Chien University held at Eslite Xinyi flagship bookstore (誠品信義旗艦店 in November last year.
Though missing from the show in Taipei, fashionistas in Hong Kong still had the chance to view the featured pieces up close and personal in an exhibition at the Fashion Gallery of PolyU, Hong Kong taking place last month till the 8th of this month. Fashion scholars and design students from Taipei and Hong Kong incorporated modern fashion elements into traditional Chinese clothes, pushing creativity to the limit by experimenting with different fabrics and textures and bringing a touch of structuralism, rock n roll vibe and various Western designs to conventional cheongsam silhouettes to revive and revitalize the Chinese qipao culture in this unprecedented qipao extravaganza showing endless possibilities with signature Chinese dresses to the fashion industry nowadays at one go.
