I moved the trunk back 3 inches using 1/4 in. thick aluminum flat bar on top of OEM mounts. In hindsight, the trunk doesn't have to be removed, but I didn't know then what I know now. It was needed at the time for a clear view to check fittings, connections and clearances.

Also moved the helmet locks back using 1/4 in. thick flatbar.

I did it a little differently than Richard Barry's method but his instructions were a huge help for dimensions and concept. (I attached the PDF he wrote).

His method kept the trunk at the same height by attaching his flat bar underneath the OEM mounts and shimming up to the mount holes on the relocated trunk. I just used the flat bar on top, moving everything up by 1/4 in.

Holes were tapped to M6-10. I needed to countersink the mount screws for the helmet lock relocaters so they didn't interfere with the bottom of the trunk.

I did not notch the flat bar or drill new holes in the trunk floor like Richard did for access to the manual saddlebag release pegs (on top of the bags) from inside the trunk. I thought those release pegs could be reached from the side due but no, not once the trunk lower skirt is installed. See picks 3 and 4 below for their new relative location. I'll have to bend up a little reach bar or drill some new pluggable holes in the trunk floor.

I also did not shim the saddlebag and trunk latch lever assembly. I think Richard may have needed to as he moved his trunk back 1.5 in and may have otherwise had interference issues. There was no interference with the 3 in. move I did, and the release latch assembly worked out fine in its OEM position.

I checked and double checked all connections before committing to the 3 in. measurement.

The critical ones were the 2 red plugs that go plug up into the rear of the trunk, and the saddlebag release cables. I had to reroute the harness for the red plugs a bit to get the length I needed, and there was just enough to spare. The saddlebag release cables were long enough to reattach to continue ability to release saddlebag lids from the levers underneath the rear of the trunk.

  • Hey, sounds like you've been busy with some modifications to your GL1500 trunk! Using an on-screen measuring tool from https://ruler.onl/ could have been handy for ensuring everything was aligned just right, especially when relocating the helmet locks. It's great that you found Richard Barry's instructions helpful, even if you ended up tweaking the method a bit. Sometimes learning as you go is all part of the fun!
